A generator that won’t start can feel like a major electrical mystery, but in most cases, the solution is much simpler. Many of the diesel generator repair calls we receive during the summer can be traced back to one of four common issues: a weak battery, a closed fuel valve or clogged fuel filter, a tripped safety interlock, or a raw water problem that prevents the generator from operating safely. Before assuming the worst, take a few minutes to check these items in order. It’s the same step-by-step troubleshooting process our technicians use when responding to a diesel generator repair call.
Start with the battery, not the generator
A generator that cranks slowly, clicks once, or doesn’t crank at all is almost never a generator problem at that point. It’s a battery or connection problem. Marine generator starting batteries take a beating from heat and from sitting unused between cruises, and a battery that reads fine at rest can still sag badly under starting load. Check the terminals for corrosion first, since a loose or corroded connection can look fine and still fail to deliver starting current. If you have a way to load test the battery, do it. If the generator cranks strong and just won’t fire, the problem is somewhere else on this list.
Fuel supply and the shutoff you forgot you touched
Generators are more sensitive to fuel supply than main engines, because they need a full, air-free fuel system to start reliably. A fuel shutoff valve bumped closed during a season of stowing gear, a fuel filter loaded with the same water and growth we’ve covered in our post on fuel condition after winter storage, or simple air in the line after the boat sat for a few weeks will all keep a generator from starting even though it cranks normally. Check that the fuel valve is open, and if the generator has run low on fuel recently or sat idle, expect to bleed the system.
Raw water and the safety interlocks
Most marine generators have a low coolant or exhaust temperature safety that prevents starting, or shuts the unit down within seconds, if the raw water side isn’t flowing correctly. A closed seacock, a clogged strainer, or an impeller that let go on the last run will trigger this protection. It’s doing its job. If the generator starts and dies almost immediately, or refuses to start at all after a recent run that seemed rough, check the seacock and strainer before anything else. This is the same raw water path we walk through for engine cooling complaints, and it fails for the same reasons in a generator.
When it’s electrical, not mechanical
If the battery is strong, the fuel system is full and bled, and raw water is flowing, the remaining causes are usually electrical: a failed start solenoid, a bad safety switch giving a false reading, or a control panel fault. These aren’t owner-serviceable in the way a fuel valve or a strainer is, and poking at wiring on a generator you don’t know well is a good way to turn a simple fault into a bigger one.
What actually needs a technician
If you’ve checked the battery, fuel, and raw water and the generator still won’t start, or if it starts and shuts down on its own, that’s the point to call rather than keep guessing.
