A standby generator that starts and runs at idle isn’t the same thing as one that can actually carry your house or your boat’s systems when the power goes out, and the gap between those two only shows up under real load. A load test is how you find out which one you have before storm season, not during it.
Why starting isn’t the same as carrying load
An engine and alternator can crank, start, and idle smoothly with almost no load on the system at all, even with problems that only appear once real amperage is being pulled. A weak cylinder, a marginal voltage regulator, or a fuel delivery issue that doesn’t matter at idle can cause the unit to stumble, overheat, or shut down the moment the AC units, refrigeration, and lights all come on together. That’s exactly the moment you need it working, which is why a load test matters more than a start test.
What a proper load test checks
We bring the generator up to a meaningful percentage of its rated capacity and hold it there, watching voltage stability, frequency, temperature, and how it responds as loads step on and off, the way they actually do in a house or on a boat during an outage. This is the same logic behind the service intervals we’ve written about for units running AC all season, since a generator that’s been quietly struggling under summer load is often the same one that fails a proper load test.

Most standby generators around here get an annual start and a quick listen, and that’s where the checking stops. It catches units that won’t start at all, but it misses the much larger group of units that start fine and fail under real load, which is the exact scenario a storm creates. A load test closes that gap, and it’s worth doing annually, not just after you’ve already had a problem.
Fuel and battery age into the test too
A load test also exposes fuel and battery issues that a quick start won’t. Fuel that’s degraded from sitting, or a battery that’s aged past reliable starting capacity, tends to show up as instability under load well before it shows up as a failure to start. Catching that now means a filter change or a battery swap instead of a no-power call in the middle of a storm.
